Vacuum suction heads, which suck on a complete layer of piece goods, are used for handling piece goods. As soon, however, as one article of this closed layer of piece goods is absent, the suction force of the remaining channels fails since the then opened or free suction bores considerably reduce the vacuum suction force of the remaining suction surfaces due to the high suction flow. A suction plate is thus to be provided, with which complete layers of piece goods can be gripped, it not being necessary for the layer of piece goods to represent a complete closed plane. The object set is achieved in that the suction plate comprises a multiplicity of suction channels which are arranged in an uninterrupted sequence adjacent to one another and one behind the other and which form a large active surface and in that a perforated plate which covers the individual channels and is intended for throttling the suction flow is arranged at the upper end. <IMAGE>
