The blocking apparatus has a movably mounted blocking element which is arranged laterally adjacent to the conveyor belt, which can optionally be fixed in a position which blocks the conveying path between the lateral guides or can be transferred into a position which unblocks the conveying path and which is mounted so as to be movable along the conveying path and is provided with a damping organ which inhibits its movement in the conveying direction and has a pressure medium cylinder and a throttle valve. The pressure medium cylinder is constructed so as to be of double-acting type and can move a control element between an end position, situated upstream, in which the conveying path is unblocked and an end position, situated downstream, in which the conveying path is blocked. The blocking element is mounted in an elongate hole of the control element and can be moved between a freely rotatable position and a blocked position as a result purely of the movement of the control element between the two end positions. The blocking element thus does not require any second pressure medium cylinder for blocking the blocking element or any flexible lines for the single pressure medium cylinder which is fixedly arranged. <IMAGE>
