In a process for producing shaped bodies comprising highly pure SiO2, the base material is produced from technical grade SiO2 or SiO2-containing minerals by the so-called fibre leaching process, the leached fibres are finely milled after heat treatment thereof and the millbase is, optionally together with auxiliaries, stirred to form a slip. The slip is then cast into the desired moulds and the body taken from the casting mould is sintered. The process can be used for the production of apparatus (crucibles, pipes, plates) for laboratory and industrial purposes, which apparatus are characterised by high purity, mechanical and thermal data comparable with conventional quartz glass or quartz ware apparatus and low production costs. <IMAGE>
