<p>A method for determining the quantity of a salicylate or reduced pyridine nucleotide present in a sample - characterised by reacting any salicylate present with an enzyme which converts the salicylate to catechol and reacting the catechol produced with a compound selected from formulae (I), (II), (III) or (IV), wherein R1, R2 and R3 are independently H, -NH2 or C1-C6 alkyl. R4-R10 are independently selected from H, alkyl, -NH2, -NR11R12, -OH, -COH, -CHO, -COOH, -CO(CH2)nH, -CONH(CH2)nCOOH or -NH2HOOCCOOH, H2NC6H5 where n is an integer from 1 to 5 inclusive and R11, R12 are independently selected from C1-C5 alkyl, to form a dye, the quantity of which can be estimated colorimetrically and the quantity of dye being a measure of the salicylate in the sample.</p> |
