Treatment of contaminated mineral oils is effected using an Azobacter microorganism. Pref. the treatment is effected in a closed vessel under N2 at a pressure of 0.5-0.8 kg (sic). The vessel is supplied successively, by vacuum aspiration, with a 45% NaCl soln., a KNO3 soln. and a (NH4)2SO4 soln., the mixt. being heated at least 45 deg. C for 35 min. after each addn. Heating is then stopped, an azobacter culture is added and allowed to stand for at least 20 min., and the mixt. is heated at 45 deg. C for 35 min. The treated oil contains a maximum of 0.27-1 ppm of pollutants. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process is esp. applicable to transformer oils contaminated with 'pyralene' (mixt. of polychlorinated biphenyls and trichlorobenzene). The treatment degrades the contaminants without forming atmosphere polluting by-proudcts. It can be performed on site, thus avoiding hazardous transport, and the regnerated oil can be re-used directly.
