A disk drum (3) comprises two end disks connected by tie rods (3, 3) rotatably mounted on the tubular bearing arbor (30). The contaminated water is admitted through the drum arbor (30) and the inlet tank (32) to the carrying by a slot nozzle (33) and flows through the filter belt (4) even when the drum is stationary. The layer of sludge so formed reduces the permeability of the filter belt, and hence the liquid level (23) rises during operation. The driving motor (19) of the drum is switched on by means of a float switch (25) or a time function element and brings a cleaned section of the band into the filtration area, whereupon the liquid level (23) falls and then rises again, and the switching cycle is repeated. Oscillating drivers (41) suspended on the disks of the drum scrape the inside of the filter belt and discharge the sludge removed onto the carrying run (4.1) at the deflection pulley (5.3). The endless filter belt comprises a plaited or woven textile made from fibres, yarns or wires of a flexible, inextensible, incompressible material. The liquid can be cleaned more efficiently if the filter belt is used as a support for a fine filter strip made from a nonwoven or similar.
