In an electric rear wheel steering system the direction of front wheels (5) is controlled manually by the rotation of a steering wheel with the rear wheels (9) are driven by a DC motor via an electromagnetic clutch (12), a worm reduction gear (13) and a gear box (7). A control unit (20) controls the motor speed based on signals from steering condition (16), vehicle speed (17) motor speed (15) and rotation angle sensors (14). When abnormality occurs, the control unit disengages the electromagnetic clutch as well as stops the motor so that manual front wheel steering only remains effective.
