PURPOSE:To obtain a deflection device having polarized light selectivity by providing a light incident/emitting plane ground optically so as to be set in parallel with the advancing direction of a surface acoustic wave and to be positioned at both side planes of a piezoelectric base material, making incident light to be deflected on an incident plane on one side, performing the internal reflection of the light on the smoothing plane of the base material, and emitting it from the plane on the other side. CONSTITUTION:The smoothing plane 2 possible to propagate the surface acoustic wave SAW and ground so as not scatter light is provided on a transmissive piezoelectric base material 1. A cross-finger type electrode 3 of Al is attached on the plane 2, and the SAW is send so as to form a phase grid on a surface layer. The amplitude of the SAW is proportional to the power of an AC power source 4, and modulation factor to be supplied on the light by the phase grid generated by the SAW is proportional to the power applied on the electrode 3, and the strength of diffracted light can be adjusted by the power.
