The combined transmitter and receiver (14) transmits an acoustic signal through the immersed measurement tube, and receives the echo signal from the fluid level (18) in the tank (16). A gas collection chamber (38) is located at the lower end part (36) of the measurement tube (22), and has a greater internal cross-section that the tube itself over at least a part of its height. The chamber has at least one inlet aperture (48) facing the bottom of the tank. When the tank is filled with a fluid which gives off gas, the chamber is filled with this gas via the inlet aperture, and the aperture is closed by the fluid rinsing in the tank. The fluid then commences to rise in the gas collection chamber to fill it, components (40) are provided to transfer the collected gas to the measurement tube and form an acoustically suitable gas connection between the chamber top and the measurement tube lower end.
