发明名称 PRODUCTION OF ETHYLENE GLYCOL
摘要 PURPOSE:To produce ethylene glycol useful as a raw material for polyester, anti-freeze, solvent, etc., at normal temperature under normal pressure in high selectivity and readily, by irradiating methanol and hydrogen peroxide as raw materials with light rays. CONSTITUTION:Methanol is irradiated with light rays in the presence of hydrogen peroxide to give ethylene glycol by one stage reaction without using an organic peroxide and an optical catalyst. In the reaction, hydrogen peroxide is decomposed by light irradiation to form OH radical as active seed, which extracts hydrogen atom from methanol to form hydroxymethyl radical and two hydroxymethyl radicals are bonded to form ethylene glycol. Especially ultraviolet light is preferable as the light for the irradiation.
