A detachable lock device for an extension ladder has a pivotally mounted locking device (2) on a siderail (1) of a section of ladder, which is designed to prevent mutual movement of two ladder sections against each other through coming into contact with a rung (3) on the other section of ladder. Is it desirable that there be arranged on the same siderail (1) as the locking device (2) a pivotally mounted aide (4) which is engaged with the locking device (2) in such a way that the aid (4) in one part of its pivotal motion triggers a pivot of the locking device (2). The aid (4) has a snag (5), which is designed to lock into place in the opposite side of the rung (3) whereby the locking device (2) is engaged and locked. A greater flexural rigidity in the siderail is achieved in this manner.<IMAGE>
