The propulsion system is applied to a vehicle which includes a guiding wheel 1 held by a hub in a fork 2 which can be oriented with respect to a frame 3 about an axis X and a propulsion device with a pedal and bottom bracket assembly 26, 27, 28, 31, 32 coupled by chain 33 to at least one driving wheel 5. This system is noteworthy in that it comprises an additional hand propulsion mechanism or "hand crank" with two hand grips 6, 7 mounted so as to pivot on the ends of crank arms 12, 13 keyed at 180 DEG to the ends of a main driving spindle 14 mounted so as to rotate in handlebar stem 15 bearings 16 secured to the fork tube 2 and located substantially parallel to the hub of the guiding wheel 1, and a transmission for coupling to the pedal and bottom bracket assembly 26, 27, 28, 31-32, this transmission comprising a head gear 20 mounted with a universal joint 17 on the main spindle 14 and held in a fixed orientation with respect to the frame 3, the transmission ratio being one to one. <IMAGE>
