PURPOSE: To prevent insufficient cooling and freezing and enhance returning of oil of a compressor by a method wherein a desired degree of cooling of an evaporator is switched periodically by a timer to control the capacity of the compressor so as to make the desired degree of cooling equal to the actual degree of cooling. CONSTITUTION: A value obtained by subtracting a constantαfrom an ambient temperature detected by an ambient temperature detecting means 2b is defined as a first desired degree of cooling T1 of an evaporator, and a first timer TM1 is started. Then, the capacity of a compressor 5 is controlled to equalize the actual degree of cooling of the evaporator to the first desired degree of cooling T1 . When the first timer TM1 has timed up, a set value of the desired degree of cooling of the evaporator is set as a second value T2 obtained by adding to a first value T1 a constantβof a value which is greater than the constantα, and a second timer TM2 is started. Then, the capacity of the compressor 5 is controlled to equalize the actual degree of cooling of the evaporator to a second desired degree of cooling T2 . If time of the second timer TM2 is up in this condition, the above-mentioned operation is repeated.
