A buffer for toy railway rolling stock, which has a buffer plate with a shaft adjacent thereto which is arranged in a housing to be longitudinally displaceable against the force of a helical spring engaging around the shaft is to be so designed that it can be produced and used, in a simple manner, as a cage-type buffer for toy railway rolling stock. To this end, provision is made, according to the invention, for the housing to be designed as a cage which consists of two symmetrical cage parts, each of which has a head part and a base part, these parts being connected to each other by webs, and both the head part and the base part each having a semi-cylindrical recess, whereof the recess of the head part serves to receive the plate shaft and the recess in the base part serves to receive the free end of the helical spring, and the two cage parts being connectable to each other in mirror-image fashion in the head region and in the base region.
