Compounds of the formula <IMAGE> in which R<1> and R<2> are different from each other and are hydrogen, NO2 or -NH2, R<3> is hydrogen or halogen, with the proviso that R<1> is hydrogen if R<2> is NO2 or -NH2 and R<2> is hydrogen if R<1> is -NO2 or -NH2, process for their preparation by reacting aromatic nitro compounds with a suitable dihydroxy compound and, if appropriate, subsequent reduction and use of the amino compounds for the preparation of polycondensates which are stable at high temperatures.
