The gas-blast circuit breaker contains a stationary (2) switching element and a moving (1) switching element, each of which has a rated-current contact (4, 5) and a consumable contact (6, 7). Provided on the moving switching element (1) are a pressure space (10) (which stores an extinguishing gas which compresses the switching arc during switching off and whose volume is independent of the switching stroke) and an insulating nozzle (8), whose nozzle constriction (9) is sealed in the high-current phase of the switching arc (24) during switching off, from (by) the consumable contact (7) of the stationary switching element (2). In this switch, the insulating nozzle (8) is intended to be subjected to comparatively low thermal loads in order to increase the extinguishing gas pressure in the pressure space (10). This is achieved by rotation of the switching arc (24) in the high-current phase in that, specifically, on the one hand, the consumable contact (6) of the moving switching element (1) is mounted in an electrically insulated manner on a contact support (15) of the moving switching element (1) and, on the other hand, is electrically conductively connected, via a coil (19) which surrounds it coaxially, to a current connection of the moving switching element (1). <IMAGE>
