In a vane-cell air compressor which is preferably coupled to the engine of a vehicle, an electromagnetically operable clutch (11) is provided at one end of the compressor casing, this clutch being capable of coupling the rotor (83) of the vane-cell compressor to a driving element, e.g. a gear wheel (27), revolving in the gear box of the engine of the vehicle. The gear wheel (27) interacts with the clutch disc (16) of the clutch (11) by means of a driver plate (25). Although the gear wheel (27) in the gear box of the engine and the clutch operate in oil, the vane-cell compressor, i.e. the rotor (3) with its blades (85), is of dry-running design. The gear wheel (27) is connected to a drive shaft (19) which passes axially through the vane-cell compressor and carries a coupling (31) for connection to a power-steering pump at the end opposite the clutch (11). <IMAGE>
