The invention relates to a special mattress which achieves by a plurality of interacting, adjustable pressure and relief chambers in the vertical direction a massage effect and a facilitation of resting for the patient. The possibility of filling and emptying a plurality of pressure chambers uniformly and rhythmically, with both manual and automatic control, makes it possible for there to be a really alternating support surface even of individual body regions. The mattress is to be produced from a soft material which can be tensioned, and consists of individual, vertically operating pressure chambers which are arranged as required. The chambers can be filled or emptied in any desired sequence or arrangement via a control channel system. The control channels necessary for this, which redistribute the filling medium used from the edge of the mattress to the appropriate chambers, are located in the lower region of the mattress and are to be connected, via a special coupling integrated on the outside of the mattress, to the control unit which contains both the pressure/suction pump and the control logic.
