For the quicker and more reliable starting of a burner (13), it is proposed to supply the combustion air (16) to the burner by means of a blower (18) at variable speed in the cold-start periods and reduced flow rate. Associated directly with the reduced flow rate is a smaller quantity of combustion air which, in the cold state, makes possible an ignitable fuel/air mixture. The lower flow rate of the combustion air (16) causes, for its part, rapid spreading of the ignition, so that even at the start of the burner operation complete combustion of the fed-in fuel is possible. <IMAGE>
