The supporting body of a sealing device of this kind has a cylindrical wall which is surrounded over its entire length by the jacket. The cap extends over the length of the sealing device and is bent inwards at its free end to secure the main seal axially. There is metal-to-metal contact between the cap and the wall and, as a result, the static sealing with respect to the outside is inadequate. In order to achieve satisfactory static sealing in the region of the cap, one jacket section projects axially over the cap. The outside of the jacket section lies at the level of the outside of the cap and forms a sealing surface. The cap thus extends over only a part of the axial length of the sealing device and, as a result, the sealing device rests in the remaining area against the wall of the installation opening by means of the jacket. The sealing device is suitable for static sealing since the metal-to-metal contact is preceded by a preliminary seal of elastic sealing material provided by the overhanging jacket section.
