Water-dilutable (water-thinnable) coating binders for the formulation of basecoats for multicoat systems, and process for their preparation

The invention relates to coating binders which are dilutable in water after partial or complete neutralisation and are based on combinations of vinyl polymers, amino resins and cellulose esters containing carboxyl groups, these binders being particularly suitable for the formulation of basecoats for multicoat systems which are applied by the wet-on-wet coating method. The invention also relates to a process for the preparation of these coating binders by copolymerisation of a selected monomer mixture in the presence of the carboxyl-containing cellulose esters and the amino resins, the cellulose esters employed being cellulose acetobutyrocarboxylates in addition, if desired, to cellulose acetobutyrates.
