In a process for the production of a preform for optical fibres in which a cylindrical starting element is produced by coating a cylindrical substrate with quartz glass, flashed with a cladding tube and combined with the starting element by collapsing the cladding tube followed by melting to give the preform, it is provided that the substrate (1) and the cladding tube (21) are mounted movably in their axis directions flush with and parallel to one another, that the substrate is then coated and further converted into a starting element (31), and that the starting element (31) is pushed into the cladding tube (21), and collapsed therewith to form the preform. <IMAGE>
