The novel cyclopropylalkyl- or -alkenyl-heterocycles of the formula <IMAGE> are liquid-crystalline. In this formula, the symbols A<1>, A<2> and A<3> are aromatic or heteroaromatic moieties, such as 1,4-phenylene or pyrimidine-2,5-diyl, which are linked via a single bond (where k and m = zero) or via functional groups M<1> and M<2>, such as CO-O or CH2-O; j, k, l, m and n are zero or 1 (j + l + n = 2 or 3). The radicals R<2>, R<3> and R<4> are H or alkyl/alkenyl, R<1> is alkyl/alkenyl or a substituent known from LC chemistry, such as an alpha -haloalkanoic acid radical. In addition, at least one of the units A<1>, A<2> and A<3> must be heteroaromatic, G is alkylene or alkenylene.
