PURPOSE:To improve the yield without forming by-products nor causing problems in corrosion of materials in hydrogenating the nucleus of a monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in the presence of a ruthenium catalyst to obtain the titled compound, by adding zinc oxide or zinc hydroxide to the reaction system. CONSTITUTION:The nucleus of a monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon is hydrogenated partially in the presence of a ruthenium catalyst. In the process, at least one of zinc oxide and zinc hydroxide as an activating component is added to the reaction system in an amount within (0.001:1)-(2:1), preferably (0.02:1)-(1:1) atomic ratio range. The reaction is usually carried out under preferably 10- 100kg/cm<2>G hydrogen pressure at 100-200 deg.C reaction temperature. Benzene, toluene, etc. may be cited as the above-mentioned raw material monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon. The above-mentioned reaction carried out in the presence of water or an alcohol, more preferably an alkali agent, permits further enhancement of the selectivity for the aimed compound. |
