Process for the preparation of a compound of the formula <IMAGE> in which X denotes the groups <IMAGE> by atmospheric oxidation of a suitable tetramethyl compound in an acidic medium under elevated pressure at elevated temperature in the presence of a catalyst mixture or its anhydride.
