Fighting and extinguishing fires of class A, B or C materials comprises directing a fire-inhibiting substance at the seat of the fire. A prod. (I) derived from lime or Mg, activated to a fine grained powder with low specific bulk density or large relative surface area, is directed at the seat of the fire at the same time. USE/ADVANTAGE - The use of (I) improves the extinguishing effect and reduces environmental pollution. (I) is claimed for use in aq. suspension for extinguishing fires; and also in the form of lining or mat in structures which are combustible or at danger from fire, e.g. building, ships, tank wagons, lorries, containers or aircraft; in sprinkler and all other distribution systems for buildings and traffic areas of all types; as mist for extinguishing fires in buildings holding environmentally hazardous, explosive or radioactive substances; and, in industrial fires with a gas front building up behind the first flame front, in a dual process, using (I) as dry powder or emulsion at the flame front and as sprayed mist to combat the wave of heavy gases rolling along the ground and the light gases rising from this directly into the air.
