The subject of the present invention is a device for winding up a plumb line. The device comprises a casing (1) containing a spring system permitting automatic winding-up of the said line (15) and any known weight, or lead (13), having a symmetrical shape of revolution about the axis of this line to which it is attached. The said casing (1) is closed at its lower part, and has a polygonal rigid plate (12) pierced with a hole (18) through which the line (15) passes, and at least one side of the outer perimeter (8) of which is tangential in projection to the greatest circle (16) of the lead (13) when the assembly of the device is held in a verticality control position YY'. <IMAGE>
