The lead accumulator has oxygen excess, and has auxiliary electrodes with less capacity than those normal. There is very little clearance between the two types of electrodes. Separators alongside the auxiliary electrodes are pref. of felted micro-glass wool, and have much lower resistance than those between the normal electrodes. On charging oxygen commences to generate where the resistance is the lowest, i.e. in the positive electrodes facing the auxiliary electrodes. The oxygen bubbles are pressed into the separators and the negative auxiliary electrodes (3) are oxidised, causing the potential to drop. The current goes where the potential is the lowest. There is no oxygen generation on the normal electrodes facing separators with higher resistance. After oxidisation of the negative electrodes, there is no hydrogen generation where the charging current is moderate. (Provisional Basic advised week 84/06). |
