Composition suitable as catalyst system for the disproportionation of olefins, containing molybdenum oxide supported on alumina, which composition can be obtained by comulling of at least a gamma-alumina providing agent with a sulphur containing compound and/or a phosphorous containing compound and optionally molybdenum oxide(s) or a molybdenum oxide(s) providing agent, to a homogeneous extrudable mass, extrusion of the mass and division into small particles, drying of the particles followed by calcination at a temperature in the range of from 400 DEG C to 800 DEG C, impregnating the obtained particles with a solution of a molybdenum oxide(s) providing agent and optionally with a solution of a sulphur containing compound and optionally a solution of a phosphorous containing compound, drying of the impregnated particles followed by calcination at a temperature in the range of from 400-800 DEG C, optionally followed by an additional impregnating step as mentioned hereinbefore, the amounts of molybdenum-, sulphur- and phosphorous containing compounds being selected such that the total final content of molybdenum is in the range of from 5 to 13% by weight, the final content of sulphur containing compound is up to 10% by weight and the final content of the phosphorous containing compound is up to 10% by weight, calculated on the weight of the total final composition.
