Air is separated into oxygen and nitrogen continuously by (a) contacting feed air with an oxygen acceptor mixt. of alkali metal nitrite and nitrate salts in an adsorption zone at relatively low temp. and pressure, (b) removing the oxygen-depleted, nitrogenrich stream from the zone, (c) elevating the pressure of the oxidized acceptor, (d) separately releasing the adsorbed oxygen at the elevated temp. in a desorption zone, and (e) recycling the regenerated oxygen acceptor.
