An oxygen sensor with a solid state electrolyte includes a heater (3) with a recess (230) receiving the cell (1) consisting of the electrolyte and electrodes assembly. Sidewall portions (232) are provided at both sides of the heater and each side of the cell is covered by the sidewall portions. A chamber (7,9) enclosing the reference electrode has an opening around one end of the heater to be exposed to the gas to be detected. The cell is joined to the heater with an intermediate layer (21) in the recess. The cell is heated up with a good heat conduction.
