The production of a felt made up of a number of layers and having a high thermal insulating power. A relatively thick intermediate layer is placed on a first sheet of felt 1, followed by a second sheet of felt 2. The sandwich thus formed is assembled by needling or stitching through the intermediate layer and then this intermediate layer is removed by chemical digestion, dissolving or melting. A central region 3 is thus obtained which forms a sheet of air and through which pass fibres 4 or threads forming connecting points between the two outer sheets 1, 2. A reflective film 5 can be provided on the inner face of one of the sheets 1, 2 and is thus protected from soiling, especially by smoke. Such felts can be employed especially for producing garments or screens for heat protection. <IMAGE>
