Both or some of the emitters on the front surface of the semi-conductor wafer cover only a small fraction insteam of the whole of that surface. The carriers of current generated in the main around the front face do not have to pass through the whole thickness of the cell base for it to be collected on the rear face. The emitters can also be situated on both sides of the cell.
