The invention concerns a procedure and a device for locating a fault in a conductor of a cable, whereby the location of the fault (4), e.g. a leakage, short circuit or break, is sensed on the spot by means of a detector, a loop being formed from a conductor pair (2, 3) in which one conductor (3) is the defective one and, depending on the nature of the defect, a voltage sufficient to produce a malfunction, e.g. spark-over, is applied to the intact branch (2) of the loop, a return current being thus set up in the defective conductor (3). According to the invention, a varying signal is added to the spark-over current to generate a varying magnetic field around the conductor loop consisting of the defective conductor (3) and the intact feed conductor (2), the fault being then located by sensing said magnetic field on the basis of mutual inductance by moving a signal detecting device (8;12;-20;21-30) up to the location of the fault (4) causing the spark-over. |
