Utilizing the fact that the temperature of a motor (1) rises in proportion to the square of the drive current, the current for driving the motor (1) is sampled for every predetermined period of time, and moving average of the sampled drive currents is calculated to estimate overload condition for the motor (1) in order to protect the motor (1) in advance so that the motor (1) will not burn due to overload.
