PURPOSE:To obtain a color-developing composition composed of an aqueous solution or an alcoholic aqueous solution containing a dimethylalkylamine oxide at a specific concentration, having high safety and stability and usable as a cosmetic, ornament, etc. CONSTITUTION:The objective color-developing composition is composed of an aqueous solution or an alcoholic aqueous solution containing 0.4-2.0wt.% of a compound of formula (R is 16-20C alkyl or 16-20C alkenyl), e.g., dimethylstearylamine oxide. A colorless transparent visco-elastic liquid can be produced by mixing the compound of formula with water at 50-70 deg.C. When the obtained solution is cooled to <=40 deg.C, a liquid crystal having a lamellar structure with a spacing of several thousand Angstrom is formed to exhibit brilliant color. In some cases, the liquid crystal develops beautiful pearl luster by leaving the crystal at 5-30 deg.C. The interlaminar spacing of the lamellar structure can be freely varied by varying the mixing ratio of the compound to water and the wavelength of the interference light is varied corresponding to the spacing. Accordingly, various colors can be developed by the use of the composition. |
