The apparatus comprises a work tank (1) with feed chute (3), a light fraction exit chute (5) and a scoop wheel assembly for collecting a heavy fraction. The latter falls and is guided by an inclined surface of the tank to a position (Fig. 1) where it is lifted by rotating arms (19) of the scoop wheel and deposited on an outlet chute (21). It may then pass to a second, similar separating stage using a suspension liquid of higher density than in the first stage. Other embodiments of scoop wheel assembly are described. <IMAGE>
