The insert (10) is provided with at least one annular groove (16) in its outer periphery and with chamfered ends (14) for entry of the insert into a hole (30) in plastics parent material (32) with an interference fit so that the plastics material of the hole wall is temporarily displaced and then resiles into the groove (16) to retain the insert in position in the hole. Opposed shoulders (18, 20) of the groove (16) are sharp edged to shear or dig into the hole wall to also resist axial movement of the insert in the hole (30). The insert is primarily intended as an anti-creep spacer to take the compressive load of a bolt or like mounting of the component and so avoid or minimise such load on the plastics material which would otherwise cause creep of the latter and loosening of the mounting.
