The bucket (Fig. 1) for a bucket wheel excavator has a bucket body (1) with an essentially rectangular opening cross-section and is fastened to the bucket wheel (3) via a first, articulated fastening device (4) and a second fastening device (6). The object is to sort out larger undivided lumps which accumulate during excavating from the bucket and the downstream belt-conveyor systems. To achieve this object, the invention provides for at least one single-arm strap (10) to be provided which extends across the opening cross-section from a supporting point (18) to the front margin (8) of the bucket body (1) and projects beyond the margins (7 and 8) over substantial portions of its extension. The strap (10) is hung with its arm (11) in the bucket body (1). The strap (10) is of U-shaped design in plan view and of S-shaped or Z-shaped design in side view. It is bevelled in a cutting-edge shape over substantial portions of its top edge (16). <IMAGE>
