For inorganic colourants containing relatively small amounts of heavy metals of an acceptable toxicity synthetic compounds having a hollandite structure are used, having the composition <IMAGE> where A = potassium, rubidium and/or caesium A<2+> = strontium B<2+> = nickel, manganese, magnesium, cobalt and/or iron C<3+> = aluminium, chromium, iron, cobalt and/or titanium D<4+> = titanium, silicon and/or tin E<6+> = 0 to 1 [sic], y = 0 to 2, z = 0 to 2 u = 0 to 2, v = 0 to 3, w = 0 to 1.
