The invention provides a process which makes it possible, effectively to decontaminate in situ a soil zone contaminated with oil or oil- or hydrocarbon-containing substances. To this end, at least one suction shaft is established in the contaminated soil zone, via which a liquid present in the contaminated soil zone, such as ground water and/or a wash liquor and/or a wash gas introduced at a distance from the suction shaft and loaded with the contaminants is drawn off and then purified in a conventional manner. <IMAGE>
