Process for the preparation, with partial recycling, of domestic refuse, bulky refuse, industrial refuse essentially consisting of packaging waste, and municipal sludge, and appliances for performing the process

Steps of the process: a) Coarse grading of bulky refuse and industrial refuse on a grid sieve, material passing the screen going to domestic refuse. b) Bulky material is very coarsely comminuted, e.g. wood chips in the comminuted material up to 1000 mm length and 60 mm width. c) Domestic refuse with material passing the screen from a) is classified into 3 fractions (drum screen). Fine material: Max. edge length 10-30 mm. Medium material: max. edge length 60-200 mm; and screen overflow. d) Iron is removed by means of a magnetic separator from all fractions from b) and c) apart from fine material; the iron is after-treated in a ball mill, and after the ball mill is separated from the contamination residues by a magnet above a conveyor. e) The medium material from c) is separated in a hydraulic flotation separator from heavy material such as glass fragments, batteries, ointment tubes, is washed free from adherent sand, and is aerobically rotted after mixing/homogenising with dewatered sludge, or is anaerobically decomposed after mixing with fresh sludge and if necessary wet comminution. f) Fine material from c) and magnetic residues from d) go to the refuse dump. g) Screen overflow from c) and comminuted material from b) are pressed into bales as fuel, if necessary after partial recycling (hand sorting belt, sheet separating plant...). A ball mill for performance of d) is mounted on rubber-tyred wheels; introduction of material is by a conveyor screw through a central opening in a side wall; discharge of material through perforated plates in the side walls. <IMAGE>
