Thermal hydrocracking of heavy oils - using pyrite additive to suppress coke formation

Hydrocracking of heavy oils contg. a large amt. of material boiling above 524 deg.C is effected by (a) contacting a slurry of a finely divided pyrite-contg. additive (I) in the oil with H2 at a temp. of 400-500 deg.C, a pressure above 3.5 MPa and an LHSV of 0.5-4.0; (b) withdrawing an effluent comprising a gas phase of H2 and hydrocarbon vapours and a liq. phase of heavy hydrocarbons; and (c) separating the phases. The process is esp. applicable to tar-sand bitumen. Addn. of (I) suppresses coke deposition in the hydrocarbon.
