The invention provides a beverage can for carbonated beverages which comprises a can body no more than 2mm (80 mils) thick comprising a core(1) of a thermoplastic material and bonded thereto at least two layers(2,3) of a film or sheet of a polyolefin material which has been monoaxially or biaxially stretched to a tensile yield strength of at least 55 MPa (8000 psi) in a given direction and an elastic modulus of at least 27.6 MPa (400,000 psi) in a given direction, one of layers being wrapped around said core at a positive angle( alpha +) relative to the longitudinal axis of said core and the other of such layers being wrapped round said core at a substantially corresponding negative angle, ( alpha -) the can body comprising at least one layer of barrier material, and can ends attached to said can body. Such a beverage can has acceptable creep, modulus and yield strength values, and manifests disproportionate stress resistance vectors for hoop and axial stresses at a 2:1 ratio.
