PURPOSE:To provide the present structure having both excellent strength and cleaning ability of exhaust gas, by reinforcing the central part of a columnar foam type made of foamy ceramic with a barrel honey-comb type reinforcing part of specific structure made to cover the outer peripheral face of the central part. CONSTITUTION:An organic foam (e.g., polyurethane) having three-dimensional open cell is immersed in a slurry consisting essentially of cordierite, dried and burnt or by another method to produce a central part 1 of a columnar foam type made of foamy ceramic. Then a cylindrical reinforcing material 2 of a structure wherein the material is made into a barrel shape, has a dent part 4 opening at least to the inner face side and part of the central part 1 of a columnar foam type is packed up to the dent part is set in such a way that the outer peripheral face of the central part 1 is covered with the reinforcing part. The prepared porous ceramic structure is preferably used as a material for collecting harmful components in exhaust gas discharged of internal combustion engines. |
