The process comprises treatment of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose of different degrees of substitution, with acetic acid. This transforms the sodium salt to the acid form. The prod. is washed, made anhydrous, activated with sulphuric acid and treated with acetic anhydride 5 for filtration-off of the prod., washing with water, and treatment with boiling sodium acetate soln. The overall substitution (DST) is 0.5-3%, for use as a stabiliser of alkali solns., etc.
