A valve needle (3) which opens inwards counter to the force of a spring (16) has a conical seat surface (4) cooperating with a valve seat (5) in the nozzle body (2) upstream of the spray duct (7). Fuel passages (14) defined in an insert (11) fixed in the nozzle body (2) have their opening cross-sections controlled by the needle (3) as a function of needle lift. Angled insert grooves (13) cause a rotation component in fuel flowing to the spray duct (7). The spray duct and the end of the nozzle body projecting into the engine combustion chamber (8) may take various forms (Figs. 2 to 7).
