Process for electrosynthesis of gem- di- or trihalogenated compounds by electrochemical coupling in an organic solvent medium containing a support electrolyte of a gem- tri- or tetrahalogenated organic compound in which at least one of the halogen atoms is other than fluorine with a halide activated in respect of nucleophilic substitutions. The electrolysis cell has only a single compartment and the anode, consumed during the electrosynthesis, is made of a reducing metal such as zinc, aluminium or magnesium, or of an alloy of these metals. This process is simple and easily transposable to industrial scale. The gem- di- or trihalogenated compounds are useful intermediates in organic synthesis.
