PURPOSE:To readily provide a homogeneous, highly active carbon material suitable as a filler for composite materials, etc., by spinning or molding a composition comprising the condensate of an aromatic sulfonic acid (salt) with methylenic bonds and a solvent and carbonizing the spun or molded product. CONSTITUTION:A carbon material is provided by spinning or molding a composition comprising the condensate of an aromatic sulfonic acid (salt) with methylenic bonds (e.g., ammonium naphthalene-beta-sulfonate formaldehyde condensate) and a solvent (preferably water or aqueous solvent), carbonizing the spun or molded product (preferably heat-calcining the product at 500-1600 deg.C under a non-oxidizing atmosphere) and preferably subjecting the carbonized product to activation treatment. It is preferable to add an aqueous polymeric compound such as an ethylene oxide condensate to the above-mentioned composition in a rate of 0.02-20 pts.wt. based on 100 pts.wt. of solid contents in the composition for an improvement in the spinning or molding property of the composition. |
