OPTICAL FIBER

摘要

PURPOSE:To enable connection without generating loss based on a core shape by matching the size of the core of the inlet and outlet of a branching/coupling device with the size of the core of an optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:The optical fiber 4 is constituted of the core 5 which consists essentially of quartz glass and is incorporated with a slight ratio of Ge and the clad 6 which consists of the quartz glass. The difference in the specific refractive index between the core 5 and the clad 6 is confined to 0.3%. The optical fiber 4 is formed to a circular section having 125mum diameter and the core 5 is formed to a square section having 10mum length on one side. A waveguide 9 having a straight waveguide which is square in section is used in order to evaluate the connection characteristics of the optical fiber 4 to the branching/coupling device, etc. The waveguide 9 consists of the core 10 and the clad 11, the respective materials of which are the same as the material of the optical fiber 4. The core 10 is formed in square section of 10mum on one side. The connection loss is thereby drastically decreased.
